I. System Requirements:
Performa 570, LC 580 and above; Centris, Quadra, Power Macintosh families.
256 Colors, 640 x 480 Resolution.
8MB RAM (5,500K of free RAM).
2X CD-ROM Drive.
System 7 or later.
II. Installation:
Before playing "Connections" for the first time, please follow the "Installation Instructions" on the CD-ROM desktop.
III. System Setup:
Before starting "Connections" please:
Ñ TURN OFF System 7╒s Virtual Memory using the Memory Control Panel. You must restart your computer for this change to take effect.
Ñ Quit any other open applications.
Ñ For best appearance, "Connections" will automatically set your monitor to "thousands of colors" unless the Monitor Control Panel is missing from the Control Panels folder or your monitor only supports 256 colors. To enable "thousands of colors", you might need to set your monitor to 640 x 480 resolution. To do so (or to confirm that your current setting permits thousands of colors) select Control Panels under the Apple menu, then select Monitors. If "thousands of colors" is not listed, click Options and select 640 x 480 resolution.
IV. Starting "Connections" & About the "Connections" folder:
Double-click the "Connections" icon in the "Connections" folder on your hard drive.
Note: You can rename the "Connections" folder or keep it inside another folder. Unless you choose otherwise, Connections automatically puts your saved games in this folder. When throwing away saved games, please don't throw away the Connections icon and the three program files inside the "Connections" folder.
V. Increasing Free Memory:
You must have 5,500K of free RAM to run "Connections". The ╥About this Macintosh...╙ command under the Apple Menu will bring up a window indicating the ╥Largest Unused Block╙ of memory (or free RAM) you have available in your system.
You may be able to increase the amount free RAM available on your system if you:
Ñ Quit other open applications.
Ñ Disable any unnecessary extensions and control panels by removing them from their respective folders. Remember not to disable QuickTime, QuickTime Power Plug (Power Mac users only), Sound Manager or your CD-ROM extension. You must restart your computer for this change to take effect.
Ñ Reduce the Cache Size to the minimum (32K) in the Memory Control Panel. You must restart your computer for this change to take effect.
Ñ Close any unnecessary open windows in the Finder.
VII. * QUICK PERFORMANCE TIP *
Ñ Allocate more RAM to "Connections:" Select the "Connections" icon in the "Connections" folder on your hard drive. Now choose "Get Info" from the file menu. Set the preferred size to 500K less than the ╥Largest Unused Block╙ of memory (or free RAM) indicated in the ╥About this Macintosh...╙ command under the Apple Menu.
VIII. Other Suggestions to Improve Performance:
Ñ Increase free memory (see above).
Ñ Disable any animated cursors.
Ñ Disable File Sharing in the Sharing Setup Control Panel.
Ñ Disable screen savers. (This will prevent "Connections" from being interrupted by the screen saver).
Ñ If you have a monitor that supports a higher screen resolution than 640 x 480, you may want to set it to 640 x 480 so "Connections" will use the full screen.
Ñ If you have at least 5,000K of free RAM, increase your Cache Size to 512K using the Memory Control Panel. You must restart your computer for this change to take effect.
Ñ If you have more than 8MB of RAM, TURN ON 32-bit addressing using the Memory Control Panel. You must restart your computer for this change to take effect.
IX. Troubleshooting:
Disk is not recognized or not booting.
CD-ROM Drivers: Make sure your CD-ROM extension is installed. Contact your respective CD-ROM drive manufacturer for information.
Check the disk: Make sure you don't have any smudges, scratches and fingerprints.
Can't start "Connections".
Follow the Installation Instructions on the Connections CD-ROM desktop about installing the "Connections" folder on your desktop. If you've already installed this folder and double-clicked the Connections icon inside it to run the program, you may have thrown away one of the three program files in the Connections folder on your hard drive. Start fresh with the "Connections" folder on the CD-ROM desktop or the files inside it.
"Connections" crashes or freezes.
Disable any unnecessary extensions and control panels by removing them from their respective folders. Remember not to disable QuickTime, QuickTime PowerPlug or Sound Manager or your CD-ROM extension. You must restart your computer for this change to take effect.
Note: AV System owners. Make sure you are using the Sound Manager which comes on the "Connections" disk.
Screen is off-center or "doesn't fit".
Your screen does not support 640x480 resolution. You need a 13" or larger monitor to support this screen resolution.
Sound and/or speech is disrupted.
TURN OFF System 7╒s Virtual Memory using the Memory Control Panel. You must restart your computer for this change to take effect.
Your version of QuickTime or Sound Manager may have become corrupted. Follow the installation instructions on the CD-ROM desktop about installing Sound Manager and QuickTime (and QuickTime PowerPlug for Power PC owners).
Characters lips don't always match their words.
The minimum platform for Connections is a 2X CD-ROM drive. If your drive is transferring less than the 2X standard (of kilobytes of data per second), you may experience poor lip sync.
